Ortisei is a small town of 4,500 inhabitants in Northern Italy, located within the Province of Bolzano. It occupies the Gardena Valley within the Dolomites, a mountain chain that is part of the Alps. The town's economy is mostly based on Winter skiing tourism and Summer hiking and backpacking tourism. In the 2001 census, more than 80% of the inhabitants classified themselves as native speakers of Ladin. However, both Italian and German are commonly spoken as additional first languages; English is also widely spoken and understood.
