Belfast is the largest city in and capital of both Northern Ireland and Ulster, and the second largest city on the island of Ireland. While the actual population within the city limits is c. 275,000, upwards of 750,000 people live in the Greater Belfast area. It is situated at the south-western end of Belfast Lough, a long natural inlet ideal for the shipping trade that made the city famous, and near the mouth of the River Lagan.
