Amrum is one of the North Frisian Islands on the German coast of the North Sea. It is part of the Nordfriesland district in the federal state of Schleswig-Holstein. Its area is 20 km², and its population is 2,400. There are five villages on the eastern coast: Wittdün, Nebel, Norddorf, Süddorf and Steenodde. The western half of the island is occupied by a large dune area; the highest dune is 32 m high. While Nebel, Norddorf and Steenodde are very old Frisian hamlets, the small town of Wittdün was founded as a seaside resort in the 19th century.
